The group “Women for Justice in Southern Africa and here”
originates from the boycott movement against the apartheid system.
When negotiations for the peaceful transition to a democratic South
Africa were drawing to a close in 1993, active women knew that boycott
was no longer the suitable means but that the legacy of apartheid
would be felt afterwards for a long time and that there was consequently
no question of retiring from public life.
The active group changed its name, remained member of the Protestant
Work Group for Women in Germany and has today around 25 members.
Focal objective of its activities is solidarity work with women
groups, mainly in the rural areas of South Africa, but also partly
in Namibia.
The subject-matter is land reform, both the return of the land
to evacuees and the living and working conditions of people on the
commercial fruit farms, the produce of which once used to be boycotted.
Since EU protectionism is especially powerful concerning trade
with agricultural produce, the group was also actively involved
in the KOSA campaign on the free trade agreements between the EU
and South Africa.
At the same time, the “Women for Justice in Southern Africa
and here” historically assess the apartheid era and support
women’s projects in South Africa and Namibia.
They take part in seminars, mailings and activities of the International
Campaign for Debt Relief and Compensation in Southern Africa. To
this end, they mainly address people involved in the church and
try to reactivate numerous women of the former boycott movement.
