This co-ordination group for Mozambique, often better known under
the abbreviation KKM, has existed since 1977 as a registered association
and has about 120 members.
To quote from their statutes and articles, the aim of the KKM is
the "encouragement of understanding and cooperation between
Germany and the people of Mozambique".
In practice, the co-ordination group has a very special focal objective.
To cite the publicly promoted profile, the KKM is one of the few
bodies in Germany that arranges and initiates partnerships between
schools in the North and the South, thus enabling learning as defined
by the Agenda 21; supports schools during this partnership process
in manifold ways, encourages reflection and discussion and also
accompanies through phases of frustration; works out suggestions
for actions in schools together with the participants and forwards
information on same.
Morever, the KKM is concerned with subjects like debts, land distribution,
educational policy, social security, tourism, art and culture.
According to its name, the KKM mainly understands itself as a place
for co-ordination and making contacts. It connects school partnership
groups, initiatives and individuals in the field of educational
work and public relations on development. To this end, contact with
Mozambicans living in Germany is especially encouraged. Generally,
the KKM wishes to intensify the exchange between Mozambique and
Germany in many fields and actually organizes cultural exchanges.
In addition, the KKM stays in contact with the Mozambican Ministry
of Education. Members and office staff of KKM forward general information
on Mozambique and Southern Africa and carry out lobbying for debt
relief for Mozambique.
The circular letter by KKM on Mozambique is issued quarterly in
Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Brochures are handed out on special
topics such as "indebtedness and structural adaptation",
"debts instead of solidarity", "land-mines in
Mozambique and Angola". Moreover, the KKM sells its portfolio
on Mozambique de-signed to provide basic information and material
for classes as well as art calendars of Mozambique, postcards, T-shirts
and literature.
The office of KKM keeps contact with members and anyone interested
in Mozambique, links partnership groups and regularly organizes
quarterly seminars and workshops.
With high-ranking topics such as trade policy and land reform, the
KKM cooperates with other KOSA member organizations, provides speakers,
if required, and exchanges information.
