Privatising the Water Sector
Water
is life - this is what is comes down to. In the last few years management
of water facilities, resources and services in many countries has
been handed over to multinational corporations. Within the framework
of the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) Southern African
countries - like many countries in the South - may be forced into
legally binding commitments to open up their markets for foreign
direct investment into and management of a long list of public services
including the water, energy, health and education sector. There
are serious doubts whether or not this process will help the provision
of basic goods for everybody.
